Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion Information Expo

Cranberry residents need to know about a major expansion and upgrade coming to the Township’s wastewater treatment plant.  An Open House will be held at the Municipal Center in Council Chambers on Wednesday, February 19 from 1:00 until 8:00 pm.

Township staff will be on hand to answer questions. Visitors will be able to review presentations and displays at the Open House:

  • History of the Brush Creek Treatment Plant  How the Township’s Wastewater Treatment Plant came about and evolved over time.
  • Inflow & Infiltration   Why getting rainwater and ground water out of the sanitary sewer network has been an ongoing project for Cranberry.
  • Odor Control  With new residential development next door, Cranberry installed and fine-tuned equipment designed to suppress the odors associated with sewage treatment.
  • Regulatory Constraints  New DEP calculations of water flow and organic content require a different approach to plant design and treatment.
  • Why Upgrade?  The plant requires more treatment capacity to service a growing population and to satisfy strict new state environmental regulations.
  • Upgrade Planning Process  Cranberry has used a methodical planning process in determining how to satisfy future plant requirements at the lowest cost.
  • Treatment Process Alternatives  There are a number of ways to meet the new treatment requirements, but they’re all expensive.
  • Financing the Project  The upgrade will cost in the $50 million-plus range.  It will require borrowing financed by rate increases.
  • What if we just say NO?  Not doing the upgrade will result in fines, loss of grant eligibility, a freeze on development, obsolete equipment and lack of treatment capacity.

Final decisions on the upgrade technology will be made by Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors on March 6.  Open House attendees will learn what choices their Board is facing.
